Rachmaninov Vespers review

Rachmaninov poster Rachmaninov poster Andrew Palmer
Rachmaninov’s Vespers were not performed in London until 1971 and, for my money, not often enough since then. I am sure this would be the view of the three hundred souls that packed the church last Saturday to listen to wonderful performance by the 70 members of the Finchley Choral Society.
It is a fantastic challenge for amateur singers to tackle something as complex at this, and with the added problem of singing in Russian. But, thanks to coach Louise Jones, they were able to produce a performance that would have been a credit to any ensemble in St Petersburg. As the church lights were dimmed the No1 Call to Worship started and it became clear from the clarity of diction and the passion of the singers that this was to be a memorable occasion.

Soloists Catherine Hopper and Ed Goater (tenor) were excellent but I did wonder whether a bass profundo would have been able to add more to the almost mystical Nunc Dimittis.

There are fifteen parts to the Vespers but only nine were sung with other short pieces of sacred music interspersed – each lovingly performed and offering the chance for small groups of the choir to shine. The concert only lasted about eighty minutes so, perhaps, a few more pieces of the Vespers could have been offered.

The Finchley Choral should rightly be proud of Saturday’s concert. They demonstrated fine technical qualities but with enjoyment and passion woven through.

The programme notes for the evening were astonishingly detailed and the whole atmosphere created by the Society was relaxed and inviting. Their next concert ( July 4 in Hampstead) promises much with works by Vivaldi and Handel.
